Rebecca Gouldson: when metal captures light and emotion

There are artists whose work resonates deeply with our own creative process. Rebecca Gouldson is one of them.

A British metal artist, she has been transforming metal into poetic and luminous surfaces for over twenty-five years. At Atelier Maus, we share with her this passion for metal, its patinas, and its unique ability to capture and diffuse light.

## A love affair with metal

These are the words Rebecca Gouldson uses to describe her encounter with metal engraving. A love at first sight that has lasted for a quarter of a century and continues to inspire her daily work.

Since her studies in metallurgy, she has continually explored and enriched her repertoire of techniques: acid etching, metal coloring, patinated finishes, controlled oxidations. Each technique becomes a tool to **capture images in metal**, to freeze light and emotion within the material.

## Metal as an emotional medium

What particularly resonates with us in Rebecca Gouldson's work is her vision of metal as a vehicle for emotion:

" I create works that are both sensitive and a reflection of the environment in which they are installed. The objects, surfaces, and quality of light that surround us can create a unique and deeply emotional connection with our environment. "

This philosophy resonates deeply with our own approach at Atelier Maus. Like Rebecca, we believe that the objects around us – and especially the light they emit – create a **unique emotional connection** with our environment.

Our handcrafted lamps are not simply light sources. They are **sensitive objects**, crafted to interact with the space they inhabit, to create an atmosphere, to evoke an emotion.

## Inspiration: between architecture and nature

Rebecca Gouldson draws her inspiration from two seemingly opposing but profoundly complementary worlds:

### The built environment

Architecture, urban structures, industrial surfaces. These elements of the built landscape nourish his work, just as they inspire our own creations. The geometry of buildings, the textures of concrete and brick, the reflections on glass facades – all these influences are reflected in our collections.

### The natural landscape

At the same time, nature – its textures, its colours, its changing light – is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The variations in slate, the reflections in mica, the nuances of metallic patinas: all these materials that we work with daily bear the imprint of nature.

## A research and experimentation approach

" Visual and historical research provides a fertile starting point when investigating the subject of a new project; further informed and developed through drawing, engraving..."
