Behind the scenes at the workshop: from raw steel to certified lighting fixture

When crafting lighting fixtures as unique pieces or in very small batches, the question of aesthetics often comes first. However, in the workshop, the reality of everyday life is primarily made of metal, grinding dust, structural calculations, and electrical constraints.

Every wall light, pendant light, or table lamp that leaves Atelier Maus follows a precise path: from working with raw steel to issuing regulatory compliance documents. Here is how this manufacturing process unfolds, step by step.

1. Working with steel: cutting, assembly, and finishing

The structure of our lighting fixtures is based on carbon steel. It is a dense, raw material that requires rigorous preparation steps before it can house the stone.

  • Plasma cutting: Steel sheets are custom-cut using plasma. This process allows for clean lines and precise contours to assemble the geometric volumes of our models.

  • MIG welding and preparation: Metal elements are assembled by MIG welding. The weld beads are then ground down and sanded to ensure clean joints and a perfectly square structure.

  • Hand-applied patinas: The steel is not covered with industrial paint. The finishes (such as dark patinas, verdigris effects, or heat treatments) are applied directly to the metal through chemical reactions or controlled oxidation. The surface is then stabilized to fix the color and stop the material from aging.Plasma cutting of a steel sheet for the production of an Atelier Maus lamp. black and white workshop image

2. Incorporating translucent stone

Once the metal frame is finished, the work of fitting the natural stone (slate, mica, or marble) begins.

Each sheet of stone is cut and then adjusted to the millimeter on the steel structure. The challenge is technical: one must ensure the stone is perfectly seated, the cuts align with the structure, and the light source diffuses homogeneously through the mineral’s veins without creating distracting shadows.

3. Electrical compliance, CE and UL export: a structured approach

A steel lighting fixture is by definition a conductive object. Electrical safety is therefore not an option; it is at the heart of the assembly work.

Training with the Chamber of Trades (CMA)

To master the entire regulatory framework and be able to self-certify the entire production, I completed the specific training from the Chamber of Trades and Crafts (CMA) dedicated to lighting regulations and compliance.

This step allows for the application of a strict methodology in the choice of components and assembly:

Certified components: Sockets, textile cables, cable glands, and switches are selected from specialized suppliers and meet current standards.

CE standards and UL export: The fixtures are designed and assembled to comply with the European LVD (Low Voltage) directive for CE marking, as well as the requirements for export to the North American market (UL standards).

Grounding and inspections: Every metal part is connected to the ground. Before being boxed, each fixture undergoes an individual continuity check and a live voltage test.

4. Technical data sheets and certificate of compliance

Because a lighting fixture must be installable with full confidence by individuals, professional electricians, or interior designers, each shipment includes a complete file:

A Certificate of Compliance: An official attestation specifying adherence to applicable standards (CE / UL).

A Technical Data Sheet: Summarizing dimensions, maximum permissible wattage, socket type, and material characteristics.

Installation and Safety Instructions: Including connection guidelines, care tips for patinated steel and stone, as well as recommendations for choosing light bulbs.

Legal safety pictograms. CE standard, indoor use, voltage standards, maximum wattage, protection rating, recycling, LED bulb

Working with the workshop

Atelier Maus designs and manufactures its lighting fixtures in the Tarn, France. Whether for a catalog piece or a custom project for a residential or professional space, we provide all the technical data necessary for integrating our models.

Do not hesitate to contact us to obtain a specific technical sheet or discuss your design project.
